Access the Assignment Builder from anywhere on the site by clicking on My Builder Tools in the navigation bar at the top of the screen.
To get started, click on "Create New" from the Assignment Builder home page and follow these easy steps:
Step 1: General Information
Start by providing information about your assignment in the form provided. The assignment name, save location, subject area and grade level are required fields. You can also create assignment instructions, learning objectives and teacher notes. Please remember to check the box to display the notes to the students if you would like the notes displayed. Check the box to receive an email notification when the student completes the assignment if you would like to receive an email notification.
You can save your quiz by clicking on the "Save/Continue" button at the bottom of the screen. If you choose not to click Save, a warning message will appear on each step thereafter, until you click on the Save button and select the folder within My Content to which you would like to save your quiz.
Step 2: Add Materials
You can add media to your assignment, such as video segments, animations or audio files. To add media, type in the word in the keyword search, choose the type of media you want, choose a subject, grade, and search either in Discovery Education Library or My Content. You can search all media types, subjects, and grades by keeping the default "all content." To add the media, click on the box next to "Add to My Assignment" and then "Add" in your search results; you are able to add multiple media and media types.
You can also add an activity such as a Quiz, Writing Prompt or links to websites. To add an activity, you search in the keyword box and choose an activity type or use the default, "all activity types" and search in just My Content, or School and District Content as well. If you chose to add media or activity, it will show in "My Assignment Materials," you may remove this media or activity by clicking the box next to "Remove from My Assignment" and clicking "Remove." To add a web link, type in the URL in the URL box and what you want to display as the name of the webpage. There is also an optional web link description box where you can type in a description of the webpage.
Click "Continue" to go onto Step 3.
Step 3: Materials Instructions
Once you have selected media, activities and websites for your assignment, you can write step-by-step instructions that your students will see as they work with each material type.
Click "Continue" to go onto Step 4.
Step 4: Preview
The Preview feature allows you to see what your assignment looks like in its final form. If you wish to make changes simply click on any of the steps in the process chain. If you would like the students to complete the assignment on paper, you may print the assignment from a webpage or Microsoft Word. Clicking on "print assignment" will open a new webpage. Clicking on "print assignment to MS Word" will open up Microsoft Word. The Preview page will also show web links, as well as added media.
Click "Continue" to go onto Step 5.
Step 5: Assign
The Assign feature allows you to share assignment information with your students. You have two options on how you can assign a Quiz to students. For assigning an assignment to a class or student click the "Assign by Class or Student" tab. You can then assign your Quiz to your created classrooms or students by checking the box and clicking Assign.
For students who do not have a username and password you can provide the Assignment Code or URL to them by clicking on "Assign by Code or URL" tab you provide the Assignment Code or URL to your students.
When you provide the Assignment Code, students will need to go to http://assignments.discoveryeducation.com/ and enter the assignment code and their first and last name in the fields provided. If you do not provide the Assignment Code, students can go directly to the Assignment URL where the Assignment Code will pre-populate. Students simply need to enter their first and last name in the field provided.
If you selected to receive an email when a student completes the assignment, you will receive an email at the email address listed in My Profile from My DE. If you would like the email to go to another email address, simply change the email address listed in My Profile from My DE.
The results of the Assignment will be available in My Content under Action within Student Results.
